As a non-married and non-Moroccan couple traveling through Morocco, we decided to stay here while stopping in Tetouan. We were accosted by the front desk and hotel manager about our marriage status, which is none of their business. They said because my boyfriend is Arab that it’s against the law, which is absolutely wrong. He told us to go to the police station, but when we argued back, he himself called police, who confirmed that we were correct. He then refused to apologize and continued to say he was right, which made zero sense.
It completely soured our stay in Tetouan and we felt extremely uncomfortable at the property. The staff should be ashamed of themselves for their demeanor and attitude towards their perception of “non-Westerners.” Everyone should be treated equally and with respect.
